Reiki and my Journey to Become a Reiki Master

I have been a Reiki practitioner for almost 20 years. For most of them, I have been a Reiki Master. When I was invited to become a practitioner, my purpose was to give healing to others – in particular, to Celio…he was my best friend and fiancé at the time. I never mention his name, but today as I write this, I want to honour his life and the difference he made in mine. I am forever grateful for the short time I had his presence in my life.

During that Reiki class, I felt the energy running through my hands and body like a tingling sensation, something that I have never felt before. I was hooked. I knew that was my path. About 6 months after Celio died and while still figuring out the new version of my life, my sister-in-law gifted me with a very thin and simple Reiki book. As I started reading it, there was something within that felt awake and like a fire. Half way through it I just knew what my calling was. I was to become a Reiki Master. I felt it in my heart and in my soul. So I started searching and it was through a series of synchronicities that I found who became my Reiki Master.

I injured my lower back – got a herniated disk moving boxes -, which led me to see a doctor, whom sent me to have treatment and to their rehabilitation gym, where I met the physiotherapist that introduced me to the daughter of a Reiki Master. This Reiki Master, introduced me to her friend and fellow Reiki Master’s group…and the rest is history. I got re-attuned on my Level I (I asked for this but it was unnecessary), then got the rest of my levels and committed to become a Reiki Master.

If you don’t know what Reiki is, let me share with you some basic information about this healing method.

Usui Reiki Ryoho (‘Usui Spiritual Energy Healing Method’): Reiki means, ‘spiritual energy’; and Ryoho means, ‘healing method, therapy, remedy, cure’ – is the original name(s) attributed to Reiki by Mikao Usui. It consists in channeling the universal energy through the hands. The energy does not come from the practitioner. A Reiki loose translation of the word could be “spiritually guided life force energy.”

A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. The energy can be felt as heat, cold, tingling sensation or some sort of current going through their body. Reiki treats the whole person including physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Even if you can’t feel anything, the energy is working. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-enlightenment that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. Reiki provides a means for spiritual growth. No matter what your religious background, you’ll find that the principles are relevant and don’t conflict with your religious practice. In fact, Reiki should enhance your personal religious connection.

There are three levels of teachings and attunements in Reiki. Level I is when you become a Reiki practitioner, you learn how to self-heal and heal others channeling universal energy. Level II is when you learn how to send healing through space and time. With this level, you can send energy healing long distance and to the past or future. Level III is the master level, where you become a teacher and pass the teachings to others. Not everyone needs or wants to become a teacher, and that is okay – it is not a commitment to take lightly. Becoming a Reiki practitioner with Level I and/or Level II is what most people do and seek – a way to heal themselves and others.

Reiki has made a big difference in my life. It has helped me understand my spiritual gifts in a different way, the better side of me as a human being, and trust both in myself and the Divine. Reiki has helped me heal painful moments (more like periods) in my life when grief, shame, guilt, fear, anger, depression, and disappointment ruled my days. It was helped me become more grateful, flow within my path, and gain (some) wisdom. It has helped me see life through a different lens. My perception has changed, and I can be more understanding, non-judgmental, and open minded than I ever was. Now I know I am a healer, because when I serve as a healer, the world makes sense to me.
